Training, certificates of competency and watchkeeping

Which certificate applies to what, how it is recognised, and what watchkeeping requires

A certificate of competency is not valid everywhere, and an endorsement is not a formality but the condition for serving on board. The course works through certificates, recognition, minimum rest hours and familiarisation the way a port state control officer checks them.

What you can do after the course

These are the learning objectives as defined for the course. The final test measures against them.

1

You determine the scope and the key definitions of Directive (EU) 2022/993 for seagoing ships.

2

You check the validity of certificates of competency, certificates of proficiency and endorsements for service on board.

3

You apply the rules on monitoring minimum rest hours and on familiarising new crew members on board.

4

You prepare the ship for a port state control inspection and recognise deficiencies that can lead to detention.
