22 Nov 2024 RyanairRyanair: 107.8 million EUR fine for cabin baggage and seat fees in Spain (under appeal) €107.8m
The Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs imposed a fine of 107,775,777 EUR on Ryanair, including for charging for cabin baggage, surcharges for adjacent seats for children and persons requiring assistance, refusing cash payments at airports, a fee for printing boarding passes that the ministry considered excessive, and non-transparent price information. The fine was part of a package of sanctions totalling 179 million EUR against five low-cost airlines. Ryanair has challenged it before the High Court of Justice of Madrid (Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Madrid), which suspended enforcement in June 2025 subject to a guarantee; the decision is not final.
Unavoidable additional charges and surcharges must be included transparently in the final price and must be legally permissible.
