23 Oct 2024 České dráhy (ČD) und Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB)ČD and ÖBB: €48.65m for collusion against a new rail competitor €48.7m
According to the European Commission's findings, the Czech and Austrian rail incumbents coordinated from 2012 to 2016 on sales of used ÖBB long-distance carriages so that the new entrant RegioJet could not buy them, including through coordinated timing, rigged sales procedures and exchanges of confidential bidder information. The fines amount to 31,940,000 EUR for ČD and 16,712,000 EUR for ÖBB, which received a 45% reduction as leniency applicant (48,652,000 EUR in total).
State-owned companies, too, must not coordinate asset sales with competitors to keep new entrants out of the market.
