19 Dec 2024 Provident Financial s.r.o.ČNB: CZK 8m fine for Provident Financial over deficient creditworthiness assessments CzechiaConsumer protection and online retail €318,383

Following an objection to a penalty order, the ČNB (Czech National Bank) fined the non-bank consumer lender Provident Financial 8,000,000 CZK. From October 2021 to October 2022 the creditworthiness rules for the products “Půjčka Provident” and “Půjčka Creditea” allowed, among other things, unverified or overstated income, insufficiently established or entirely disregarded expenses and understated liabilities, and in every contract examined (53 and 25 respectively) the company granted loans without an adequate creditworthiness assessment. The ČNB Bank Board dismissed the appeal on 15 May 2025 and upheld the decision.

What organisations can take from it

Creditworthiness assessments must capture income, expenses and existing debts completely and verifiably; simplified models that leave out burdens are a supervisory risk.
