For years the cameras at stations and stops of the Budapest suburban railway HÉV also recorded sound; the NAIH (Nemzeti Adatvédelmi és Információszabadság Hatóság, Hungarian data protection authority) found breaches of transparency, data minimisation, lawfulness, storage limitation and the duty to carry out a data protection impact assessment. It imposed HUF 50,000,000 on the operator's legal successor and at the same time warned it against future audio recording without demonstrated necessity.
Audio recording in video surveillance is a separate and serious intrusion that needs its own necessity assessment, including an impact assessment.
