According to the European Commission's findings, the fashion house Pierre Cardin and its largest licensee Ahlers prevented other licensees and their customers from 2008 to 2021 from selling Pierre Cardin clothing outside their licensed territories or to discounters, in order to secure absolute territorial protection for Ahlers. The fines amount to 2,237,000 EUR (Pierre Cardin) and 3,500,000 EUR (Ahlers), 5,737,000 EUR in total; one party was granted a reduction after its claim of inability to pay had been assessed.
Licensing agreements must not be used to shield markets from sales from other Member States or to discounters.
