10 Dec 2024 Klarna Bank ABKlarna: SEK 500m for gaps in money laundering risk assessment and procedures €43.4m
Finansinspektionen (FI, Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority) issued Klarna a remark and an administrative fine of 500,000,000 SEK for breaches of the anti-money laundering act between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022. The general risk assessment lacked, among other things, assessments of how products and services could be misused for money laundering or terrorist financing; for the invoice product (faktura) there were no procedures capturing all situations requiring due diligence, and there was no procedure for model risk management. The maximum was based on the group's 2023 turnover of 24.64 billion SEK; the bank itself had a turnover of 19.65 billion SEK.
Fast-growing payment providers must reflect every product in their money laundering risk assessment and maintain procedures for every trigger of due diligence obligations.
