Because of a blockage caused by unflushable items, a pumping station in Ormesby St Margaret discharged untreated sewage in 2018 into Spring Dyke, which flows into a drinking water supply and nature conservation area; thousands of fish died. The court found the company negligent and imposed 300,000 GBP plus 21,896.56 GBP in costs. According to its 2025 annual report, the utility employed an average of 5,874 full-time equivalents.
Fix known weaknesses at pumping stations without an emergency overflow permit before they lead to a discharge.
