14 Mar 2025 AV Terrace Bay Inc.AV Terrace Bay pulp mill: CAD 525,000 fine for effluent and air emission breaches €334,587
In May 2023 all rainbow trout died in a toxicity test on the effluent of the pulp mill, which is discharged via a creek into Lake Superior; in the same month the mill also exceeded the limit for total reduced sulphur (TRS) in its air emissions four times. The court convicted the company of two offences under the Environmental Protection Act and fined it CAD 525,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of CAD 131,250.
Even short-lived exceedances of effluent and air emission limits can lead to heavy fines; continuous monitoring and swift corrective action are essential.
