On application by AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, Australia's anti-money laundering regulator and financial intelligence unit), the Federal Court of Australia on 7 June 2024 imposed a penalty of 67 million AUD on the casino operator for contraventions of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006; the casino operator must also pay AUSTRAC's costs of 3 million AUD. AUSTRAC had brought the proceedings in December 2022 following its own supervisory work in the casino sector, having identified serious and systemic non-compliance with anti-money laundering obligations.

What organisations can take from it

Supervisors examine entire sectors proactively; businesses operating in them should test the effectiveness of their anti-money laundering programme themselves before the regulator does.

On application by AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, Australia's anti-money laundering regulator and financial intelligence unit), the Federal Court of Australia on 11 July 2023 imposed a penalty of 450 million AUD on the two casino operators for contraventions of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006. This followed a settlement in May 2023 in which the casino group allegedly admitted the contraventions; the penalty is payable over two years, and the casino group must also pay AUSTRAC's costs of 3.356 million AUD.

What organisations can take from it

As reporting entities, casino operators are subject to anti-money laundering law; gaps in meeting their obligations can trigger penalties running into hundreds of millions.
